A call to prayer for Burners at Burning Man

What is Burning Man? Burning Man is an annual event which promotes and creates a counter culture like community for a week and beyond. See here for more info.

Who are Burners? Generally, “Burners” are people are have attended and/or regularly attend Burning man. On Burning Man’s website, a Burner is defined as: a citizen of the worldview that is Burning Man. May be encountered everywhere. Burners include more than 70,000+ attendees from all over the world each year.

The type of person who feels drawn to this event is open to all religions, sexual orientations, belief systems, etc. A wide range of people attend Burning man such as: Business Executives, Leaders, Yogis, Spiritual Seekers, etc.

Burners deeply value creative and radical self-expression. There are absolutely no borders to their spirituality or any other aspect of themselves. At Burning Man, Burners may walk around naked, experiment with drugs, dance, and/or explore art. The Burning Man mentality reflects that creative and radical self-expression breeds freedom.

Why do people attend Burning Man? For many reasons. Most people who attend Burning Man are seeking spiritual freedom, peace and harmony. Some people want healing, restoration, and deliverance from their own personal and internal struggles. Through conversations, encounters, and interactions with others Burning Man, many of them also hope to spread “peace, love, joy, etc.” in the world.

Upon having a “Burning Man” experience, most Burners adopt the worldview that through raising a higher consciousness, everyone can collectively create a radically informed, inclusive, and new world. Many of them believe that every individual must activate and unleash their “unique potential/power within” to co-create love, joy, peace, etc. on Earth.

What do they believe? Burners do not attach themselves to any specific belief system. However, this community does reflect a set of principles which have surfaced over the course of Burning Man’s inception (i.e. radical inclusion). See here for Burning Man’s 10 principles.

What is its relation to the New Age Movement? The spirituality of Burning Man would be best described as a mixture of postmodernism, Paganism, and New Age thinking.

What is the New Age Movement? The New Age (NAM) movement has many sub- divisions, but it is generally a collection of Eastern-influenced metaphysical thought systems, a conglomeration of theologies, hopes, and expectations held together with an eclectic teaching of salvation, of “correct thinking,” and “correct knowledge.” It is a theology of “feel-goodism,” “universal tolerance,” and “moral relativism.” In the NAM, Man is central. He is viewed as divine, as co-creator, as the hope for future peace and harmony. A representative quote might be: “I am affected only by my thoughts. For in this single thought is everyone released at last from fear,” (A course in Miracles, The Foundation for Inner Peace, Huntington Station, N.Y. Lesson 228, p. 461). (Source: CARM).

What goes on at Burning Man? All kinds of activities. They range from art classes and magic to spiritual healing and meditation. People bring art cars, decorative bikes, and all sorts of creative costumes to the event. These activities reflect the theme of man himself creating his own reality filled with peace, harmony, creativity, etc. At the end of the event, a sculpture of a man is burned in order to symbolize the passing away of the “old” self. This burn may mean many things to people such as: a phoenix rising of oneself, a release of a burden, a decision to let go of a relationship, etc.

Testimony at Burning Man: When I attended Burning Man, I thought I was connecting with “like-minded” people who just wanted to do good in the world. I was attracted to the idea that people could create their own reality, with the application of universal spiritual principles (i.e. new age thinking). While there, I sought out healing from my

previous boyfriend’s death (i.e. I visited the Burning Man Temple for the loss of loved ones; spiritual healing tents; danced; met people; drove with people in art cars, and thought I created my own experience there). With the art cars, tents, and smiles from people, I truly felt like I was in a safe place. When I came to know The LORD in February 2015 and the “scales” were removed from my eyes, I was able to see that much demonic activity takes place at Burning Man, and the enemy is deceiving people and infiltrating occult beliefs into their minds. I was also able to see that everything I was seeking through the New Age Movement (i.e. Burning Man like events) is found in Jesus Christ.

What does the Bible say about Burning Man?

Deuteronomy 18:9-14: When you come into the land that the Lord your God is giving you, you shall not learn to follow the abominable practices of those nations. There shall not be found among you anyone who burns his son or his daughter as an offering, anyone who practices divination or tells fortunes or interprets omens, or a sorcerer or a charmer or a medium or a necromancer or one who inquires of the dead, for whoever does these things is an abomination to the Lord.

Revelation 21:8: But as for the cowardly, the faithless, the detestable, as for murderers, the sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars, their portion will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur, which is the second death.

Isaiah 8:19: And when they say to you, “Inquire of the mediums and the necromancers who chirp and mutter,” should not a people inquire of their God? Should they inquire of the dead on behalf of the living?

Leviticus 19:31: Do not turn to mediums or necromancers; do not seek them out, and so make yourselves unclean by them: I am the Lord your God.

Romans 1:18-32: For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth. For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse. For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened. Claiming to be wise, they became fools.

Isaiah 5:20: Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter!

2 Peter 2:1: But false prophets also arose among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them, bringing upon themselves swift destruction.

Luke 9:25: For what does it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses or forfeits himself?

Psalm 63:1: A Psalm of David, when he was in the wilderness of Judah. O God, You are my God; I shall seek You earnestly; My soul thirsts for You, my flesh yearns for You, In a dry and weary land where there is no water.

Psalm 143:6: I stretch out my hands to You; My soul longs for You, as a parched land.

John 4:14: Jesus said to her, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again. But whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a fount of water springing up to eternal life.” The woman said to Him, “Sir, give me this water so that I will not get thirsty and have to keep coming here to draw water.”

John 7:38: On the last and greatest day of the feast, Jesus stood up and called out in a loud voice, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink. To the one who believes in Me, it is just as the Scripture has said: ‘Streams of living water’” will flow from within him. He was speaking about the Spirit, whom those who believed in Him were later to receive.

What should I do about what’s going on at Burning Man? If you are a Christian, you know that all of the answers Spiritual Seekers at Burning Man are looking for are in Jesus Christ. Jesus is “the way, the truth, and the life” (John 14:6). People can only have true peace by reconciling their relationship with God through Jesus Christ (Romans 5:1). People can only find true love through the cross and knowing that Jesus Christ laid down His life for us (1 John 3:16). People can only find true joy in Christ (Psalms 21:1-7). True freedom is in Christ, as we are set free by the powers of sin and death by Him (Galatians 5:1). True Restoration of the Earth will happen when He returns. Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more (Revelation 21:1).

How can I pray for people going to Burning Man? Pray that God has mercy and grace on everyone who is going to this event. Pray that the Lord protect the lives of people who are attending Burning Man. Pray that He guard them from Satan’s lies and demon oppression/possession. Pray that the Lord deliver those who are currently oppressed and/or possessed by the enemy. Pray that the Lord free them from their occult mindsets and lifestyles, and that He brings them Home to Himself. Pray that the Lord surround them with people who know Him and who are following Him. Pray that The Lord reveals Himself to those who are seeking The Truth, and pray that He have His way with them. Pray that the Lord protect and go before His Sons and Daughters who are attending this event, and pray that He reveal all truth to them by the power of the Holy Spirit. There may already be ministries at Burning Man, so pray that they are covered by the blood of Jesus and that they be led by the Holy Spirit as they minister to people.
